Pablo Campos is in the midst of the second-best scoring season in the RailHawks’ five-year history.
After scoring a goal against Minnesota last Wednesday and assisting Matt Watson’s goal on Saturday, Campos upped his season totals to nine goals and 20 points – both of which would be new club records if Etienne Barbara hadn’t already destroyed those records in the first half of this season.
Barbara set the single season marks in 2010 by scoring eight goals and 18 points. With 17 goals – including one Saturday against Ft. Lauderdale – eight assists and 42 points this year, Barbara confined his strike partner to being Buzz Aldrin to his Neal Armstrong.
Campos’ accomplishments aren’t diminished one bit, and his presence alongside Barbara at the top of the RailHawks’ attack has given the club the NASL’s most feared attacking duo. With 26 goals between them, they have accounted for 60 percent of the RailHawks’ goals this season.
Defensive Adjustments
In the eight matches since Brad Rusin’s transfer to Denmark, the RailHawks have used the same back four in back-to-back matches only twice – July 9 and 13 and last week against Minnesota and Ft. Lauderdale.
Despite the constant shuffling, the defense has held down the fort, giving up eight goals in those eight matches.
On Saturday, the RailHawks withstood 16 shots and 14 corner kicks to post their second shutout since July 3.
Shot Selection
It’s not how many shots you take, it’s what you do with the ones you have.
Saturday’s match marked the 12th time this season the RailHawks have been outshot by their opponent – Ft. Lauderdale held a 16-11 edge – yet it was their sixth win of the season in such contests. Overall, the RailHawks are 6-3-3 when allowing more shots than they take, and they’ve outscored their opponents 19-9 in those games.
