Richard Martin Named NASL Defensive Player of the Week

Puerto Rico GK Made 7 Saves and Stopped a Penalty vs. Scorpions

MIAMI, Fla. April 16, 2012   ̶  Goalkeeper Richard Martin of the first-place Puerto Rico Islanders was named the North American Soccer League ( NASL)  Defensive Player of the Week after posting his second consecutive clean sheet against the San Antonio Scorpions on Sunday, April 15 at Heroes Stadium in a 4-0 Islanders win in front of 13,151 fans.

“Richard has been great so far this year,” said Head Coach Adrian Whitbread. “He has made some amazing saves that have kept us in the game. I expect him to continue to grow during the rest of the season.”

Martin, who spent time with Barclays Premier League giants Manchester City as well as numerous clubs in English Football League, has recorded 12 saves through two games in 2012, including seven in the game against the Scorpions. 

The Chelmsford, England-born keeper has started the season with two shutouts, including a spectacular save on a penalty kick from Scorpions forward Pablo Campos in the second half Sunday.
