NASL Announces Player Suspensions

Additional Suspensions Imposed on Two Players for Actions in April 14 Carolina-Atlanta Match

MIAMI, Fla. April 25, 2012 – The North American Soccer League (NASL) today announced that additional suspensions and fines have been levied against two of the players involved in the incidents that occurred during time added on in the match between the Carolina RailHawks and the Atlanta Silverbacks at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina, on April 14.

After a thorough and exhaustive examination of the game video and photographs, interviews with players, coaches, match officials and other credentialed personnel on the scene, the NASL’s Disciplinary Committee has determined the following punishments to the following players for their roles in the events that occurred that night:

  • Nico Colaluca, Atlanta Silverbacks– Five-game suspension effective with the game of Saturday, April 28, plus an additional fine of $400
  • Brian Ackley, Carolina RailHawks– Two-game suspension effective with the game of Saturday, April 28, plus an additional fine of $150
  • Christopher Nurse, Carolina RailHawks – No additional suspension or fine

All three players were assessed mandatory one-game suspensions, which have already been served in Atlanta’s and Carolina’s games last week, and assessed the accompanying standard league fines for having received red cards for violent conduct in the match on April 14.

“The NASL sincerely regrets that the match ended in such an unfortunate and disgraceful manner,” commented NASL Commissioner David Downs, “but nonetheless wishes to thank the match officials, the two coaching staffs, stadium security, Cary police and also the vast majority of the players on both teams for their part in ensuring that the incident was exceptionally brief and did not escalate.”
