The Carolina RailHawks (0-3-2, 3 points) returned home after two weeks on the road to a loss 1-0 to the San Antonio Scorpions (1-2-1, 5 points). The match was the first meeting between the two teams in a young NASL season. Kevin Harmse scored the lone goal of the game.
The game went back and forth throughout both halves, with the Scorpions taking control of much of the first half. San Antonio’s Fabian Kling received a yellow card in the 12th minute after a late tackle on Zimmerman. The RailHawks had a good chance on the ensuing free kick but it was cleared by the Scorpions. In the last play of the half, San Antonio’s Josue Soto hit a shot off the crossbar, but the score remained 0-0.
The RailHawks came out in the second half pushing for a goal, and they almost gone one when Cory Elenio fired a shot in the 62nd minute, but it clanged off the crossbar. The rest of the half had chances for both teams, and in the 82nd minute, Harmse scored off an assist by Esteban Bayona. In the 89th minute, Ty Shipalane almost tied up the game, but was called offside on a close shot.
“It’s disappointing. The first half was even, but we showed a lot of character in the second half,” said RailHawks head coach Colin Clarke. “We got after them and attacked, we just needed the goal. We are moving in the right direction and just need to keep our heads up. Fortunately, we have the opportunity to get back on the field next Wednesday.”
The RailHawks are back in action at WakeMed Soccer Park on Wednesday, May 2nd for the 4th Annual Taste of the Triangle. The RailHawks will take on the Fort Lauderdale Strikers at 7pm. Tickets for the game and for Taste of the Triangle are available at www.CarolinaRailHawks.comand at the Cruizers box office by calling (919) 459-8144.
