Streaks End for RailHawks with 1-0 Loss at Minnesota

BLAINE, Minn. – The Carolina RailHawks suffered a 1-0 defeat on an added-time goal Saturday night against Minnesota, ending their 13-match unbeaten and 10-match winning streaks.

Two minutes into added time, Minnesota’s Devin Del Do sent a cross from the right flank to the back post. Geison Moura headed the ball back across the goal, and Amani Walker flicked it into the net for the game’s only score.

Like the RailHawks only other loss this season – on April 9 against Puerto Rico – the game-winning goal came in stoppage time with the RailHawks down a man. On Saturday, midfielder Chris Nurse drew his second yellow card of the match and was sent off in the 84th minute. With his exit, the RailHawks lost a big defensive presence from the back of their lineup.

“I’m proud of the effort and what we put into the match,” said RailHawks coach Martin Rennie. “We dominated parts of the game, which is always a hard thing to do away from home. Some of our play in the final third was not as sharp as it needed to be or as good as it’s been throughout the season, but I was confident we still could have got a goal. Getting a man sent off made it very difficult, and it was hugely disappointing to lose a goal that late. It doesn’t matter how many you win, it still feels terrible whenever you lose.”

Minnesota (5-7-3) has proved to be a formidable foe for the RailHawks (12-1-2) over the past two seasons. In four regular-season meetings, the RailHawks have suffered three defeats and earned one draw against the Stars.

“Minnesota are well coached and hard to break down,” Rennie said. “They’re disciplined, they press hard and they work hard for each other. They tie a lot of games, and they hardly every lose by more than one. All their games are close.”

Similar the RailHawks’ last trip to Minnesota – a 1-1 draw on April 30 – goalkeeper Brad Knighton was tested throughout the evening.

He made his first save in the second minute, diving low to stop Tino Nunez. In the 11th minute, Del Do got a 1-v-1 opportunity have a giveaway deep in the RailHawks’ end, but Knighton came off his line and denied the chance. In the 90th minute, Knighton kept the match scoreless with a reflex save on a Del Do flick from inside eight yards.

Knighton finished the game with five saves.

While Knighton did his best to keep a clean sheet, Saturday marked the first time all season RailHawks were kept off the scoreboard.

But it wasn’t for a lack of quality chances.

In the 35th minute, Etienne Barbara spotted Kupono Low running into the area, but Low’s header went wide.

In the 49th minute, Pablo Campos’s brace from 18 yards hit the crossbar.

In the 67th minute, Barbara’s penalty kick was saved by Minnesota goalkeeper Joe Warren.

In the 76th minute, Barbara nearly tucked one in, but his low, left-footed shot from 12 yards went just wide of the far post.

Saturday’s defeat also was the RailHawks’ first road loss of the season, ending six-match unbeaten run away from WakeMed Soccer Park.

The RailHawks will remain on the road and look to begin new streaks on Wednesday, when they meet Edmonton at Foote Field at 9:30 p.m. EDT. Then they will have a 10-day break before returning to WakeMed Soccer Park to meet Edmonton on July 23 at 7 p.m.
