Rusin Garners Headlines, Plaudits After Goal

Former RailHawks captain Brad Rusin grabbed headlines around the U.S. in early July when he transferred to HB Køge, a newly promoted team in Denmark’s Superliga.

On Sunday, Rusin grabbed headlines again on both sides of the Atlantic after scoring a goal that’s been described as ‘jaw-dropping,’ ‘highlight-reel,’ and ‘must-see’ and has been compared to Diego Maradona’s Goal of the Century from the 1986 World Cup.

“It has been crazy, to be honest,” Rusin wrote in an e-mail regarding the attention his goal has garnered. “There has been a lot of media coverage on the goal and tons of people are talking about it. The media here is already saying it could be the goal of the year. My Twitter [@BradfordRusin] and Facebook accounts have been very busy. It is pretty crazy how one goal can get so much attention. It is great for me and the club because it puts both of our names out there. So I am very happy about that.”

During his two-plus seasons with the RailHawks, seldom did Rusin venture forward into the attack, save for set pieces. The two goals he scored during his time here were both on corner kicks. Though he didn’t demonstrate it, he always knew he had that weapon in his arsenal.

“I made runs like that in Carolina. I just never scored on a run like that. My teammates knew that I liked to do it in Carolina and now they know here at HB Køge,” Rusin said. “I am always good for a run or two up the field. It usually occurs when I anticipate a ball going into a forward. My momentum from winning the ball allows me to go forward quickly and not many players on the other team are ready for me to be coming.”

Not only are they unprepared for it, but they don’t know how to handle it if and/or when it does, as evidenced by the five Lyngby defenders who were unable to slow Rusin’s foray forward.

“When the ball came to me in the middle of the field I was already moving forward,” Rusin said. “I hesitated a little to see if anyone was around who I could pass to. I didn't see many bodies in front of me – on the opposing team or on our side – and I just thought I would gain speed and see where I got. Once I got closer to the box, the defenders were still not really stepping towards me, so I thought I would take it all the way. Once I beat the last man I had a second to look up and see where the goalkeeper was. The only place I could of put it was the back post. Fortunately I was able to do that.”

Rusin’s goal was a part of a wild sequence to close the first half. His goal came six minutes after Lyngby’s Mathias Tauber gave his team a 1-0 lead. Rusin scored the equalizer for Køge, but Tauber scored again in the 45th minute, and Lyngby went on to win 3-1.

While Rusin appreciates the plaudits, he’d trade them for a win.

“Like I have told all the media here in Denmark, I am a defender. To score a goal as a defender is a bonus. To give up three goals as a defender is not good enough,” Rusin said. “So I am disappointed at the results the last two games. We played well and probably deserved a bit more than zero points out of the two games, but right now we are being punished for little mistakes that we need to fix. We need to do it in a hurry because we host FC Copenhagen this weekend and it will not be an easy one.”
