Cary, NC (Friday, August 8, 2008) – The Carolina Railhawks lost to the Montreal Impact 2-0 on Friday night in an electrifying match that saw three ejections and an exciting ending.
It only took eleven minutes for Montreal to score the first goal, Leonardo Di Lorenzo found an open spot for Impact forward Severino Jefferson who was able to beat Mauricio Segovia and find himself one on one with Chris McClellan and slot the ball to his left.
The RailHawks almost scored an equalizer with a free kick in the 16th minute. Kupono Low took the shot looking for Antoniuk’s head but the RailHawks forward headed it to the right of the goal post for a goal kick.
The Impact almost scored again early in the second half when in the 47th minute Felix Brillant beat four defenders and McClellan only to kick the ball wide to the right of the goal.
The end of the match saw a few fireworks and three ejections in as many minutes. In the 88th, RailHawks defender David Stokes took down Di Lorenzo from behind and center referee Andy Chapin did not hesitate to show him red. A discussion ensued between some of the bench and the referees and Chad Dombrowski was also sent off in the 89th minute. In the 90th Montreal saw red when Felix Brillant brought RailHawks midfielder Ryan Solle with a nasty tackle.
The RailHawks came close to tie it all up in the 90th with a header by Frankie Sanfilippo that ended inches above the crossbar. Montreal immediately took advantage of the counter and Pato Aguilera was able to beat Chris McClellan and find himself in front of the net and two defenders easily slotting the ball in the bottom right corner fixing the score at 2-0
