Match Preview: RailHawks at San Antonio
The Carolina RailHawks (2W-1T-1L, 7pts) travel to San Antonio to take on the Scorpions (2W-0T-2L, 6pts) on Saturday, May 10th at 8:30pm ET. The evening game will be broadcast on NASLlive.com and ESPN3.
Saturday’s match will be the RailHawks third appearance on ESPN3 as the NASL Match of the Week.
"San Antonio is a talented team and we are looking forward to the matchup on Saturday night," said RailHawks head coach Colin Clarke. "It's going to be another tough weekend of competition. Coming off a very emotional victory last week we are going to have to be prepared and ready to play."
The RailHawks are coming off of a 1-0 victory of the New York Cosmos that moved them into 3rd place overall. Sitting five points behind 1st place, the RailHawks victory did come with some causualities when defenders Connor Tobin and Kupono Low were ejected for receiving two yellow cards each in the match. Both defenders will miss this weekend’s match. San Antonio will look to rebound from a 1-0 home loss to Tampa Bay in Week 4 action. The Scorpions sit one point behind the RailHawks tied for 4th place.
In 2013, the home team came out the victor in all four matches played. In the RailHawks two wins at WakeMed Soccer Park they outscored San Antonio 7 to 3. In the two losses at Toyota Field, the RailHawks offense was stymied scoring 1 goal to 4 goals for San Antonio. Surprisingly, in eight matches between the clubs none have resulted in a draw.
All-time, the RailHawks are 1W-0T-3L in matches played in San Antonio. The victory came on September 16, 2012 when Tiyi Shipalane scored a 69th minute goal to give the RailHawks a 2-1 victory.
Rich Balchan Comes to the RailHawks on Loan
Rich Balchan joined RailHawks training this week after being loaned to the team from Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer. Balchan will join the RailHawks in their trip to San Antonio before returning to Salt Lake City. The RailHawks were in need of depth on the backline with three defenders out of Saturday match. Connor Tobin and Kupono Low will serve their one-game suspension on Saturday and Uriah Bentick continues to recover from an injury sustained in the May 3rd match versus New York. Balchan played four years for the Indiana Hoosiers men’s soccer team before being drafted 12th overall in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft. The former U.S. U-20 National Team player spent two years with the Columbus Crew before joining Real Salt Lake prior to the 2013 MLS Season.
Fitzgerald Named NASL Player of the Week
RailHawks goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald was named NASL Player of the Week for the RailHawks’ Week 4 home victory over the New York Cosmos. Down to eight men after two ejections and an injury, the RailHawks led by Fitzgerald’s five saves earned a 1-0 shutout victory to extend their home unbeaten streak to 18. Fitzgerald stopped a point blank shot in the 77th minute to keep the net empty. He became the 2nd RailHawks player to earn NASL Player of the Week honors.
